SUMMARY:Fungi Foray: A guided Walk Through Howick's hidden kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Ever looked twice at a rotting log and wondered what’s actually going on down there? \nWe certainly have! That’s why we’ve collaborated with a local fungi legend and expert to come along and explore Howick’s hidden fungi kingdom with us! \nJoin us for a FREE family-friendly guided walk through Murphy’s Bush to observe\, marvel and learn all about the mostly overlooked world of fungi. \nWhy is there no set date? \nFungi are weather-dependent and are most abundant shortly following rain. Rather than locking in a set date\, we’ll tailor our expedition so the forest floor is at its best. \nAs there is no set date\, we will run these events as conditions allow\, so please register for the waitlist even if we’re full – we may have time for several events. \nWhen weather conditions are right\, we will try to keep the event date to a weekend \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nHow to spot and identify common fungi species\nWhy fungi matter for forest health\nPhotography tips (bring a camera!)\n\nWhat to bring: \n\nSturdy shoes\nRaincoat (remember fungi love it damp and wet!)\nCamera or phone for photos\nCuriosity\n\nPLEASE NOTE \nCollection of fungi is prohibited from this site without proper permits – we will be enforcing this! \nBOOKING IS ESSENTIAL: Click the website provided below or here to book!

SUMMARY:Weed Swap Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Help protect our local biodiversity by clearing your property of invasive “eco-weeds” and replacing them with beautiful New Zealand natives! This community initiative makes it easy to dispose of difficult pest plants and gives you the tools to start your own native restoration at home. \nHow It Works\n\nClear Your Garden: Remove invasive pest plants such as Moth Plant (pods and small vines) and Rhamnus from your property.\nSafe Disposal: Bring your collected weeds to the designated disposal bins. These bins are specifically for invasive species that shouldn’t go in your standard green waste.\nThe Swap: For every load of pest plants you bring in\, you can take home a free native plant to help restore your garden’s ecosystem (while stocks last).\n\nEvent Details\n\nLocation: Lloyd Elsmore Park (Bells Road Entrance)\nGoal: To stop the spread of invasive seeds (like the billions of seeds produced by Moth Plants) and provide a “halo” of native habitat for local birds and insects.\n\nPro Tip: When removing Moth Plant\, ensure you wear gloves and long sleeves\, as the sap can be an irritant. For the best results\, try to pull small vines out by the roots! \nImportant Notes for Participants\n\nThis service is intended for residential pest plant disposal.\nPlease ensure you are only bringing recognised pest plants for the swap.\nCheck the PFHW News & Events page for specific weekend dates and times as they are announced throughout the 2026 season.

SUMMARY:Ayrlies Wetlands Bird Walk - Mandarin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a peaceful exploration of the Ayrlies Wetlands\, a sprawling 14-hectare sanctuary that serves as a vital refuge for New Zealand’s birdlife. Originally a salt marsh\, this area was transformed in 2001 into a thriving ecological haven featuring a 3.3-hectare lake and over 20\,000 native plantings. \nEvent Highlights \n\nBird Watching: Discover over 80 species of native and visiting birds. Keep an eye out for the New Zealand Scaup\, Grey Teal\, Pukeko\, and the comical New Zealand Dabchick.\nGuided Insight: Learn about the history of the wetlands’ creation and the ongoing restoration efforts that support local biodiversity.\nScenic Walk: Enjoy a leisurely 3km loop walk (approximately 1 hour) across well-maintained boardwalks and pathways that link the lush gardens to the shores of the Hauraki Gulf.\n\nImportant Information\n\nParking: Please note that the Wetland Carpark is located approximately 1km further down Potts Road from the main Garden entrance.\nAttire: We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing binoculars for the best bird-viewing experience.\nAge Restriction: Please be aware that Ayrlies maintains a policy where children under 12 years old cannot be admitted to the property.
