Engaging Chinese Communities in Environmental Action
A Practical and Interactive Workshop for Auckland’s Environmental Organisations
How can environmental organisations meaningfully engage Auckland’s Chinese communities?
Is translating a flyer into Chinese enough? Which media platforms actually reach people? How do family relationships, cultural traditions and different understandings of nature influence participation?
Join us for an interactive morning of fresh perspectives, practical insights and honest conversations about connecting Chinese communities with local environmental action.

What Will We Explore?
1. Beyond Language — Understanding People and Culture
Explore how family structures, generations, cultural values and different social expectations shape community participation. Discover why cultural engagement goes much deeper than festivals, food and translation.
2. From WeChat to Wetlands — Making Media Work
Compare Chinese-language media, WeChat, Xiaohongshu and community networks. Learn how online communication and offline relationships can work together to build trust and encourage participation.
3. Good Intentions, Different Experiences
Many newcomers bring enthusiasm, valuable skills and environmental experiences from overseas, but may be unfamiliar with Aotearoa’s unique ecosystems, local environmental practices and community expectations.
How can environmental organisations turn this enthusiasm into informed, meaningful local action?
4. Why Should People Participate?
Community engagement is a two-way exchange of value. Explore what motivates people to volunteer, learn and contribute — and how organisations can inspire participation without relying on fear, social pressure or manipulative messaging.
5. Bring Your Own Project
Work with other participants to rethink a real engagement challenge. Leave with practical ideas to strengthen your organisation’s connection with Chinese communities.
Who Should Attend?
This workshop is designed for:
- Environmental project coordinators and managers
- Community engagement and communications staff
- Conservation and restoration groups
- Environmental NGOs and community organisations
- Organisations interested in engaging Chinese-speaking communities
No previous experience working with Chinese communities is required.
What Makes This Workshop Different?
This is not a lecture about Chinese culture or a tutorial on translating promotional materials.
Through interactive questions, real-world examples, group discussions and practical exercises, we will explore how cultural understanding, environmental knowledge and effective communication can create more meaningful community participation.
Small by design: With just 20 places available, everyone will have the opportunity to contribute, ask questions and connect with others.
Register Your Interest
Free admission | 20 places available | Registration essential
To help us tailor the workshop to participants’ needs, we will ask a few short questions about your organisation and your community engagement interests.
Places are limited, and priority may be given to organisations actively working with, or planning to engage, Auckland’s Chinese communities.
Registration closes 10 November 2026, or earlier if all places are filled.
We look forward to exploring how we can make environmental participation more welcoming, relevant and meaningful for Auckland’s diverse communities.
