Native Trees for Native Birds
School Planting Project

What is the cadetship programme?

Our Native Trees for Native Birds project aims to empower schools to add native plantings to their schools to build up their ngahere (forest), in turn providing habitat for native bird, reptile and insect life. These extra habitats across a very urban and industrialised Tāmaki Makaurau can act as ‘safe stepping stones’ and help to get rare and endangered bird species from pest free islands in the Hauraki Gulf back to the mainland. Each ngahere will also provide opportunities for our tamariki to connect with nature often in a safe environment.

Over the past few years, PFHW has enabled local schools to plant more than 1000 native plants within school grounds. This is a huge achievement for our schools and our environment. In 2026, we will be focussing on three local schools, to enrich their existing planting by adding ~400 plants.
