As dusk settled over Mangemangeroa Reserve, more than 70 keen locals gathered across three evenings, torches dimmed, and voices lowered, in search of Aotearoa's most magical natural wonder, right in our own backyard: the glow worm!
Together, we shared stories of this wondrous creature and its role in our ngahere. Tucked beneath banks and shaded roots, the glow worms shone like reflections of the stars. We found them in expected spots and unexpected ones, discovering that the paths around us are home to far more than you'd ever notice in daylight.
For many, this was their first time experiencing the wonder of glow worms, and for most, it was their first time seeing them in Tāmaki Makaurau.
A massive thank you to everyone who came along. Your curiosity and care are exactly what a pest-free future needs.
