On the morning of May 19, 2026, we had the absolute pleasure of partnering with the Auckland Seniors Group for a special "Nature Exploration" public welfare lecture at the Botany Library.
It was an incredible hour spent with 19 enthusiastic senior Chinese, all eager to dive into the unique ecological wonders of New Zealand. Pest Free Howick Ward as the keynote speaker, it was a joy to guide such an engaged audience through the secrets of our local environment.
Rather than focusing solely on pest animals, we wanted to shift the lens and highlight some of the often overlooked, but incredibly important contributors to a thriving ngahere: bugs.
Led by our bug expert and Community Activator, Peter, our stall invited students to step into the fascinating, up-close world of invertebrates. Over four days, we welcomed 461 students, teachers, and parents from 12 schools across Howick and South Auckland. Armed with mini microscopes and a sense of curiosity, participants explored leaf litter, logs, and natural materials to discover the incredible diversity of life that exists beneath our feet.
Highlights of our journey together included:
- The Wonders of the Deep Forest: Uncovering the unique habits of New Zealand’s only native terrestrial mammals, the rare long-tailed and short-tailed bats.
- Masters of the Sky: Shifting perspectives on local ecosystems by exploring the world-record highlights of New Zealand’s magnificent birds.
- Nature in Your Wallet: Connecting nature with daily life by breaking down the cultural and ecological stories behind the native birds featured on the $10, $20, and $50 banknotes.
The energy in the room was fantastic! The members brought wonderful curiosity, asked insightful questions, and showed a deep appreciation for native flora and fauna.
Hearing everyone’s excitement and their eagerness to step outdoors for future hands-on field trips was the ultimate reward. Thank you to the Auckland Seniors Mutual Help & Care Association for hosting us and for creating such a warm, supportive community. We can’t wait for our next outdoor adventure together!
