Bat Walks 2026
Our recent Pekepeka walks at Point View Reserve were a fantastic opportunity for the community to discover the hidden nocturnal world of Aotearoa’s native bat, the pekepeka; however, after nearly two months of weekly searching, no concrete evidence of bats was found, despite the amazing effort of all involved. However, all hope is not lost, as a handful of unusual detections may hint at a transient population; more work is still needed to better understand our nocturnal friends.
Nonetheless, all who participated experienced the beauty of Point View Reserve after dark and witnessed no shortage of glow worms scattered across the bush.
Despite the distinct lack of our nocturnal friends, these events were a great way to connect the community with their local nature in a hands-on and memorable way. It was really encouraging to see such great interest from everyone across all ages (so much that we even extended it by another month!) Keep an eye out for our socials and the Humanitx page for more wonderful, free events in the future!
